The most important element of pastoral care is its spiritual nature.  It does not merely look at the physical elements of a person but understands the emotional and mental aspects of one’s entire personhood.  This is more than mere psychological understanding but a spiritual understanding that leads pastoral care givers to see all as another Christ.  If you are caring for the elderly this takes a great patience and love.  The elderly need more than just nonstop physical care but also need spoken too and treated like individuals.  While they may have lost some of their physical abilities they still may have vivid memories of their youth and may feel depressed.  As a pastoral care giver, you will want to engage their spirit and make them feel young again as they carry their final cross to their final destination which is heaven.
